The players who participate in ranked matchmaking will be more skilled, more experienced players. We anticipate that any given player will have different expectations and play the game differently in ranked matchmaking compared to normal matchmaking. What Makes a Good Match? The ultimate goal of automated matchmaking in Dota 2 is for players to enjoy the game.
The matchmaker seeks matches with the following properties listed in no particular order: The teams are balanced. The discrepancy in skill between the most and least skilled player in the match is minimized. This is related to team balance, but not the same thing. The discrepancy between experience measured by the number of games played between the least experienced player and the most experienced player is minimized. More on this below. The highest skill Radiant player should be close to the same skill as the highest skill Dire player.
Each team contains about the same number of parties.

This figure is assumed to be skewed upwards, as it is generally believed that newer and less skilled players are less likely to display their MMR publicly, and therefore are not considered in the data analysis. Uncertainty Uncertainty is the standard deviation of a player’s MMR. Players with high uncertainty are more likely to be matched with players that differ more greatly in skill level, and vice versa. New accounts with few games played tend to have high uncertainty, while older accounts with many games played tend to have low uncertainty.
Since normal and ranked matchmaking are tracked separately, a player who has many normal games will still experience high uncertainty in ranked matchmaking if they have only played a few ranked games, and vice versa. Higher uncertainty leads to larger MMR adjustments after each match, and lower uncertainty leads to smaller adjustments.
How Does Dota 2’s New Seasonal Ranked Matchmaking Work?
As a result, for someone like you and I, reaching that mark first should be the goal. But even then, reaching those standards could end up taking years as gaining MMR is quite difficult when one win only affects the rating by just The Solo MMR changes when a players plays ranked matches on his own. While, the Party MMR changes when one plays ranked with at least one other party member.
Under 5 games in a lot of cases. For them to gain rating they would need to play games before they hit their proper rating. Variation of performance per game is a no-brainer. There are nearly heroes. They have ideal line-ups, and less ideal line-ups. They have vastly different playstyles, and your average player is going to not be equally skilled with all of them. From the perspective of consistency the game is a nightmare, and while this makes for a better game it wreaks hell on effective matchmaking.
If the average playtime of the 10 players in the game is under 25 hours, the matchmaking is essentially a weak educated guess. This undermines the effectiveness of the results, which makes the matchmaking take even longer to detect player ratings, which undermines the effectiveness of even more future games, and so on, and so on. Stats without context are meaningless! Dota is an extremely complicated game.

“A Modern Multiplayer Masterpiece”
The difference is, in HoN, even though you can spot a smurf, you can’t avoid playing against him since you’re already matched against him. That is pretty cool, and I think it will be effective. Dota on the whole has much better smurf protection ever now then HoN did when I played. That being said games is quite a lot, and it might be a pretty annoyance to new decent players perhaps from LoL who want to play ladder but have to grind 80 hours or whatever of games in unranked.
It will also be the first thing in Dota that requires playtime to unlock I guess you count the tutorial.
The biggest new change is the requirement to have a registered phone number on file in order to play ranked online multiplayer matches. Players that can only use their primary accounts in ranked play will also think twice about trolling others, so this new update should bring a much-appreciated upswing to the community. Players currently have until May 4 to register their mobile phone numbers for Dota 2 ranked play. After the 4th, accounts that do not have a phone number attached to them will be unable to participate in ranked matches.
If a phone number is unlinked from an account, there is a three-month cooldown period before the original number can be linked to any Dota 2 account. Now, players queueing up for a ranked match can choose to only be teamed up with other solo queued players. This is a fantastic option for MOBAs. Coming from personal experience, no solo queue players wants to go up against an organized team that is familiar with each other.
Valve has also introduced duration-based bans from Ranked play for players that are trolling their teammates and intentionally feeding. In addition to the current game-count-based low priority requirement. The ban will start at a low threshold of a few hours, and increase up to four days for players who are very frequently in low priority.

Are There Any Stats About Skill Ratings In Dota 2
Now what I have a problem with is your mmr being visible only to your friends, I understand this is to prevent trolling etc and I do understand vavles core focus is on curbing toxic behaviour within the community however with just a number how are we to know how skilled of a player we truly are and where we stand compared to other players. I am hoping they release some sort of chart indicating the percentiles or something so that we can get a sense of where we are at and where we need to be.
Also I think it may be a good idea to implement visible rankings to guildmates or have like an opt in guild ladder where you can choose to show your stats to your guildmates. I rember at one point they had a page on the community tab where they displayed the person who played a hero really well for the week or something like that, things like these should be brought back. Maybe a global ranking where players names are hidden and just mmr is shown perhaps?

While games like League of Legends and World of Warcraft have utilized role selection queues for years, Valve only recently incorporated this exclusive feature for TI8 Battle Pass owners. The exclusivity of this new mode is a curious choice that filters the playerbase within an experimental context. This rationale is further reinforced by the temporary duration of the mode – currently scheduled to conclude with the expiration of this season’s Battle Pass. Although it typically makes sense for developers to examine significant changes in a test environment, the limitation of this approach alienates non-Battle Pass players, while affecting their ranked experience all the same.
The Dota Plus subscription has been live for just over two months, and provides subscribers access to a real-time educational overlay the Plus Assistant locked behind a paywall. As a strong proponent of proactive solutions, I believe the Plus Assistant is a step in the right direction for players capable of leveraging its suggestions. That being said, if a feature is designed to promote a more knowledgeable playerbase to enhance the overall experience, why would such a tool not be made available to everyone?
In its current format, the paid access required for Ranked Roles mode has divided the playerbase in a similar manner to Dota Plus – provoking cynicism within the community around what could be construed as having to pay for a better experience within a free-to-play framework. Current Drawbacks Monetary concerns aside, players with and without this season’s Battle Pass have been subjected to the same logistical side effects. One of the more notable effects has been a diluted player pool by two separate queues – significantly increasing queue times, especially for regions with smaller playerbases i.
In some cases described on Reddit, players most likely carries are experiencing fifteen-twenty minute queue times for Ranked Roles mode, and five-ten minutes for Normal Ranked. The importance of shared data related to the particular roles selected and corresponding queue times seems necessary, however no such utility is offered within the client.
One more step
The most-played game on Steam. Every day, millions of players worldwide enter battle as one of over a hundred Dota heroes. And no matter if it’s their 10th hour of play or 1, th, there’s always something new to discover.
Dota 2 will require players to link a phone number to their accounts to participate in ranked matches, to curb the creation of multiple accounts by a single user. Whatever the case, multiple accounts “create a negative matchmaking experience at all skill brackets,” Valve said in a blog post announcing the change. It takes effect May 4. Valve acknowledged that a linked phone number will not eliminate multiple accounts for a single user entirely.
Unranked play has no such requirement to link a phone. However, “Having more players using their primary accounts will have a positive effect on both Ranked and Unranked Matchmaking,” Valve says. Dota 2 accounts that already have phone numbers linked will still need an extra confirmation step before playing ranked matches after May 4.
Phone numbers may be changed but that number will be ineligible for use for three months before it can be registered on a new account. And yes, phone numbers provided by online services, such as Google Talk, won’t be allowed. There are other changes introduced with this patch too. In matchmaking, if a player’s solo matchmaking rating is higher than their party rating, they will get a higher matchmaking rating — splitting the difference between the solo and party values.
Some other penalties and countermeasures have been introduced to curb toxic behavior in games, and South Africa, India and Dubai have been removed as ranked matchmaking regions.
